About Classical Education

What is classical education?

Classical education is a time-tested approach rooted in the Trivium model: Grammar (K4-5), Logic (6-8), and Rhetoric (9-12). Each stage builds critical thinking, virtue, and communication skills. At VCA Virtual, we emphasize wonder and discovery in the early years, logical reasoning in middle school, and eloquent expression in high school—all within a Christian worldview that centers on truth, beauty, virtue, and the formation of the whole person (mind, body, and soul).

How is classical education different from regular school?

Classical education focuses on developing wise, virtuous thinkers rather than just covering curriculum. We emphasize great literature, primary sources, and Socratic discussion. Students learn Latin, logic, and rhetoric alongside core academics. The goal is to form the whole person—intellectually, morally, and spiritually—not just prepare for tests.

Does VCA use Great Hearts curriculum?

Yes. VCA Virtual partners with Great Hearts Academies for classical curriculum instruction, Wisconsin Virtual School for advanced courses, and VCA-developed programs. This combination gives your child access to world-class classical education with the flexibility of online learning and the support of Wisconsin-based staff who understand local families.

What is the parent's role in VCA Virtual?

You are your child's primary educator and partner with us. You provide accountability, encourage growth, and manage the student's work schedule. VCA provides instruction, curriculum, and support. It's a true partnership built on the principle that parents and the school work together for your child's formation and success.

Accreditation & Curriculum

Is VCA accredited?

Yes. VCA Virtual is fully accredited and recognized throughout Wisconsin. Our accreditation ensures that our curriculum meets rigorous standards and that your child's degree is accepted by colleges and universities nationwide.

Will my child's diploma be accepted by colleges?

Absolutely. VCA Virtual diplomas are fully recognized by colleges and universities across the country. Our accreditation and classical curriculum prepare students exceptionally well for higher education. Many VCA graduates attend top universities.

What subjects and grades does VCA offer?

VCA Virtual serves grades K4 through 12. We offer a complete classical curriculum including core academics (English, Math, Science, History), languages (Latin, modern languages), arts, and electives. Each grade level is designed to match the Trivium stages of learning.

Is VCA's education Christian-based?

Yes, 100%. VCA Virtual is a Christian school. Our curriculum integrates Christian theology, biblical worldview, and virtue formation throughout every subject. We believe education should form the whole person—mind, body, soul, and Christian worldview. Faith is central, not peripheral, to learning.

School Choice Programs

What are Wisconsin parental choice programs?

Wisconsin offers several programs that provide tuition funding for eligible families to attend schools like VCA Virtual: WPCP (Wisconsin Parental Choice Program), MPCP (Milwaukee Parental Choice Program), RPCP (Racine Parental Choice Program), and SNSP (Special Needs Scholarship Program). VCA Virtual is the only fully classical online program that accepts ALL of these programs.

Is the tuition really free?

Yes, if your family qualifies for one of Wisconsin's school choice programs. Tuition is 100% covered by state funding. There are no hidden fees, and your family pays nothing if you meet program eligibility requirements. We believe excellent classical education should be accessible to every Wisconsin family.

Do you accept WPCP, MPCP, RPCP, and SNSP?

Yes. VCA Virtual is the only fully classical program online that accepts ALL parental choice programs (MPCP, RPCP, WPCP, SNSP). Whether your family qualifies for WPCP, MPCP, RPCP, or SNSP, we're here to serve you with classical education at no cost if you meet eligibility requirements.

How do I know if I qualify?

Each program has income eligibility limits based on household size. WPCP caps at 220% of federal poverty, while MPCP and RPCP allow up to 300%. SNSP is based on disability status and IEP documentation, not income. Check your eligibility here or contact us for detailed guidance.

How Online Learning Works

Is online learning right for my child?

Online learning works best for students who are self-motivated, organized, and have family support. VCA Virtual isn't "passive" online school—it requires active parent involvement and student accountability. If your child learns well with flexibility and your family can provide structure, online education can be ideal. We encourage a conversation with our admissions team to evaluate fit.

What technology do I need?

You need reliable internet and a computer (laptop or desktop). Most students also benefit from a printer. VCA works on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook. We don't require expensive equipment—standard home technology works fine. If you have technology concerns, contact our team.

Will my child feel isolated at an online school?

No. VCA Virtual fosters community through live classes, group discussions, virtual events, and optional field trips. Students interact with teachers and peers regularly. The online format provides flexibility while maintaining the relational, community-focused experience classical education is known for.

How much time does a student spend online per day?

This varies by grade and program. Typically, elementary students spend 2-4 hours daily on structured learning, while high school students spend 4-6 hours. The beauty of online learning is flexibility—you can choose morning or evening, and pacing can adjust to your family's rhythm within the academic calendar.

Enrollment & Getting Started

When can my child start at VCA Virtual?

Enrollment opens annually for Fall 2026, with priority enrollment February 2-20, followed by rolling enrollment through September. We enroll students on a rolling basis until seats fill. We strongly encourage early enrollment to secure placement for Fall.

What documents do I need to enroll?

You'll need proof of your family's income (tax return, W-2s, or pay stubs), your child's birth certificate, proof of residence, and immunization records. Our admissions team will provide a complete checklist and guide you through the process step-by-step.

How long does the enrollment process take?

Enrollment typically takes 2-3 weeks once you submit all required documents. We move quickly to confirm eligibility and get your child started. If you enroll early in the priority window, you'll have plenty of time before the school year begins.

Can I switch to VCA Virtual mid-year?

Yes, mid-year transfers are possible if seats are available. However, enrollment windows often close in spring, so we recommend contacting us early if you're considering a mid-year switch. Starting in the fall is ideal for best curriculum flow and community integration.

Special Needs & Accommodations

Do you serve students with special needs?

Yes. VCA Virtual welcomes students with IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) and documented disabilities. We provide accommodations and support to help each student thrive. Additionally, the Special Needs Scholarship Program (SNSP) provides tuition funding regardless of income for families of children with disabilities—a tremendous asset to our community.

What accommodations are available?

We work with families and current IEPs to provide accommodations like extended time, modified assignments, assistive technology support, and additional tutoring as appropriate. The online format also allows flexibility in how students access curriculum. Contact our admissions team to discuss your child's specific needs.

Does VCA accept SNSP funding?

Yes, absolutely. SNSP (Special Needs Scholarship Program) provides 100% tuition funding based on disability status and IEP documentation, with no income limits. If your family has a child with an IEP or disability, SNSP is often your most accessible path to VCA Virtual enrollment.
